We have interviewed Julia Rothman before in Small about her favorite independent publications for kids. I have recently been to her site and I remembered what a great resource it is. As well as being a talented artist, author and co founder of the webdesign group ALSO, Julia collects and reviews all kinds of independent art publications. Laura Wood is an Italian born illustrator residing in Australia. She has such sweet prints and cards in her online shop and lovely work to look at on her website.

Molly-meg- the wonderful vintage children's chair shop has expanded into a full design shop for kids. I found the little children wall art there by Zoe de la Cases. Zoe is a French illustrator and designer with all kinds of lovely art. accessories and paper toys on her website. I love these paper dolls and tiny fold up paper shops.

Have you seen Judy Kaufmanns wonderful work? Judy is based in Barcelona and believes their should be less of a division between graphic and fine art. She has great orignal art, t-shirts and more on her sites and also does custom and comissioned work.

small finds- tooth fairy kit

My litlle girl has a wobbly front tooth- she has lost a couple before but the front teeth seems to make a big change in the way they appear, from little girl to something much more like their older selves yet to come. I love this tooth pillow idea from Moomah- and making it your self makes it even more special.

Moomah has some lovely prints and party invitations in their shop before. We have featured Jaqueline Schmidt- Moomahs arti drector amongs other things- in Small before (see the interview here). I love everything she does.

We were lucky enough to have Julia Staite do the illustrated fashion story in the Issue 17. We loved the circus themed images she mad and now they are availble for sale in her etsy shop. If you click over there you will find - alongside her prints and stationary - these very cute alphabet blocks

Small decor- more about walls

If you don't live conveniently close to one of the wall muralists we featured last week but are still interested in a bespoke wall covering Little Hands might be just what you are looking for. Little Hands is the work of two Portuguese artists, Leonor and Marta.  They have a huge catalog and can make any theme for any wall. They can even include personalised elements and names. The wallpaper arrives ready to go up and the image is designed to fit perfectly. We love how they look up on the wall!

La Marelle has in new Adolie Day products. Our favorite is this adorable melamine plate set. We love Adolie's work and were really excited to be able to feature her in the last issue of Small. She did the amazing illustrated fashion story, Sun Kisses in the summer issue

We do the illustrated stories in the same way we do the photo stories. We approach an illustrator we admire and discuss story possibilities. In the latest issue we asked the super talented Kay Van Bellen.  Once we have settled on a theme Christine acts as the stylists and finds all the clothes she wants in the story and send them along to the illustrator who then uses them in a story that features the fashion, but celebrates the illustrators own unique style. Our first story like this was with Fifi Lapin way back in our fourth issue. We have now had 11 amazing artists contribute these stories. You can find them near the front of each issue.

small studio- Mathew Porter

Mathew Porter is a author and illustrator who paints onto wood to get a fresh and distinctive finish. He has put out five childrens books, many available through Simply Read Books or in his online shop.

As well as books he has some super cool prints which I think would look great decorating in a boys room. You can see one of them below on his work table.

Here Mathew tells us a little about his work space: My studio is at the far end of our 1954 Ranch style home in Seattle. My studio was originally a garage that was turned into a living room by the previous owners. When we toured the house 3 years ago I knew right away that it would make an amazing studio. Lots of light and as it is at the far end of the house it feels a bit separated which is ideal as when I sand it does not get the rest of the house all dusty!

You'll see on the far right my newest addition to my studio a baby monitor. My wife also works from home so we both have a monitor and switch off caring for our son. My records on the left and my record player on the right - I am a pretty avid thrift store shopper for old records!

 

My tea pot at the end of the photo - I drink lots and lots of tea. I grew up in England near Brighton but have lived in Seattle for the past 12 years. But you never grow out of drinking tea! Although my coffee intake has increased pretty substantially! Also my paint jars on my desk are a reminder of home. I eat an awful lot of Marmite on toast. Marmite is a yeast paste from England and it is well know you either love it or hate it and I happen to be in the love it camp.

The painting is a piece I completed about 4 months ago. I have turned it into a large poster print and made it really just for the fun of it!

The Best of Renegade Craft Fair Austin Part 2

Public School – Public School is a creative collective of 3 photographers, 4 designers and 1 illustrator based in Austin.  Their booth was filled with fantastic posters, one reading: “Tie your shoes, pack a good lunch and remember we are all in this together” and a photo booth where they were taking “class portraits”.  Would love these guys to do a shoot or illustrated story for Small!

Brooke & Adelyn – Organic children’s clothing hand stamped with ladybugs, twigs, flowers and butterflies on rompers, jumpers and dresses in soft pastel colors.

Leah Duncan – I was immediately drawn into Leah’s booth by the color palette of her illustrations and her textiles.  Pillows, tea towels and fabric adorned with geometric patterns and florals in soft grays, yellows, greens, and oranges. Beautiful!

Clay Wood & Cotton – A brick and mortar shop in Beacon, NY filled with small designers like, Kate Durkin  (pillows left) ceramics illustrated with birds by Take Me Homeware and handmade plush monsters by Karen’s Monsters.

Small Illustrator - Lilla Rogers Studio

While on a recent trip to NYC I stopped in at PrintSource, a textile and surface design show to do a little research for my clothing line Little Bean. I came across this booth filled with beautiful, colorful illustrations and immediately thought I was staring at the pages of Small Magazine.  The booth was Lilla Rogers Studio, an illustration agency representing about 30 artists. Lilla, an artist herself, started the agency in 1994. Check out the Lilla Rogers shop where you can find links to the artists work on pillows, book, paperdolls and wall decals.
