Small projects- make a doll

We love Adolie Day and have featured her work in Small before and we are excited to tell you about a competition she is organising to encourage hand making dolls for kids and big kids! Make a doll out of any material (wood, fabric clay etc) and send an image by email to [email protected] before midnight Septemeber 14. There will be two winners- one under 12 and one above 12. The winners will recieve a copy of Adolies new book Coquette- Paper Dolls' and a signed number copy one of her prints, Pom D'Api shoes and will be exhibited in a gallery in Montmarte Paris in early 2012 alongside other doll artists.  

 

small art- Consumed, a live animation

Some images from the 'live animation'- a seven day installation project by ten artists I organised last week. This project was inspired by Small which, for us, has always functioned as a space for testing new creative ideas and to provide support, infrastructure and exposure to a range of projects and artists within a framework.

Each artist had the space, half studio and half display space, for 24 hours to do what they wanted with.  I hoped it would provide the impetus for community engangement, collaboration and creative experimentation without too much emphasis on outcome. The entire project was filmed by four video cameras and a still camera and will become an animated film in the future. Small photo- Siblings Project Photos!

Small caught up with Davina Zagury at her Siblings Project exhibit opening at Pomme NYC. The sunny Saturday afternoon was filled with families trying to find Davina's favorite of them on the wall of so many! All unique and beautiful.

It was fun watching children sip lemonade and smile at the photos of themselves with their brother(s) or sister(s). Here are a few Davina kindly let Smaller post. Enjoy!

Small designers- BKLYN DESIGN

Brooklyn Design Market is going on this weekend at St Ann's Warehouse, 38 Water Street in Dumbo. We went last year and it was a lot of fun and very inspirational. This year there will be a plenty of live music and a kids lounge featuring fun, functional, and fabulous childrens’ furniture by BKLYN DESIGNers. There will be crafts and free 100% biodegradable balloons for the kids. Some of the designers included are Colleen and Eric, Argington, Casakids (there is an interview with Roberto Gil in the last issue of Small) all pictured above. Pictured below is a sample of the funky and very bright wall paper from Flavor Paper, amazing furniture from Hugh Hayden and Katie Vitale and narrative wall paper from Grow House Grow.

and also....  Adolie Day sent us her image inspired by Alice for the exhibition Curiouser and Curiouser. We also love the illustrations by Oksana Badrak and Amy Sol for the same show . 

Small furniture - vintage chairs for kids

In our Winter issue we interviewed Molly Meg about her collection of vintage childrens chairs. As well as running her on line store she was also working with the curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood to source items for their upcoming exhibition on seating for children. For this exhibition she located iconic designs from the 1950's and 1960's. The exhibition 'Sit Down' is now open for the next six months so if you are in London be sure to check it out.

Continuing with furniture...If you are interested in vintage children's furniture, Molly Meg told us about her favorite book on the subject- Mobilier Design Pour Enfants. 

'Someone equally fascinated by children’s chairs is Carol Daprey who has just published a book on design for children called Mobilier Design Pour Enfants focusing on children’s furniture design, a bible for any collector. Bringing together some of the best and most iconic designs by likes of Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Jean Prouvé.  Her book places each piece in an historical context. It is only published in French, but is available in English early next year. Daprey also has a very inspirational blog which you can read here'.
