I remember seeing k studio at the NYC Gift Show last year and was drawn to the modern embroideries of little girls and boys on pillows and art. I was just reacquainted to the site and fell in love the customized family series pillows. I am currently a little obsessed with finding cool, non-cheesy personalized gifts for the holidays. How awesome is that black pillow?
Advent Calendars are a great way to answer the "how many more days to Christmas" question. Here are four of our favorites, all reusable year after year. We have copied the stories of how these designs came about from each site - lovely little stories.
Sweet Petunia "Twenty five 2" x 2" boxes have been decorated with Christmas retro feeling paper, then numbered to help you count down the days to Christmas. They are ready to be filled with whatever your heart desires. The boxes are attached to hefty chipboard and hung with a ribbon. The lids are fully removable so if you want to mix up the days for more of a scavenger hunt you can. The last thing we need is more mass produced advent calendars going into landfills after this holiday season. I believe that this will become a lasting part of your families holiday tradition."

Peppermint Pinwheels "When I was little, my family had a handmade advent calendar in the shape of a Christmas tree with little hooks on the branches and a special little toy that was hung on each hook every day until Christmas morning. I remember how exciting it was hanging up my toy, knowing every day I was one day closer to Christmas. This year, I decided to make a new advent calendar. This calendar is designed to look like festive holiday bunting, but each of the 25 pennant triangles is a fully lined, button enclosed pouch, perfect for small presents or candy."
Nouveau Design "I remember my family having an advent calendar while I was growing up and I was always so excited to open a new window each day in December until Christmas. I have decided to make my own, featuring my digital illustration of some shop fronts, inspired by the quaint little shops in Amsterdam. Windows and doors are numbered 1-25, and reveal a tiny symbol of Christmas behind each one.
This calendar is printed on thick watercolor paper, which gives a nice texture to the print and a substantive quality to the overall piece. The print is then mounted with strong adhesive spray to a white foam core board. I have tried to make this calendar sturdy enough to be used year after year and hopefully it can become an anticipated tradition during the holiday season."
Well, the holidays are fast approaching and we are starting to think about shopping! Over the next couple of weeks while we are putting together the winter issue we will also be posting about all the great independent and handmade shops and sales that will be going on.
Our first shopping post is a bittersweet one. Our very own Small Finds editor Robert Maher, proprietor of the indie mecca Mahar Drygoods is closing shop. Robert was a pioneer in the handmade movement and we are sad to see his shop close after 5 years but we know that there are good things planned for Robert and can't wait to find out what he is up to. We can still hear his thoughts and indie finds on his wonderful site Junior Society and he will continue his Small Finds feature in Small. The good thing for us is that Mahar Drygoods will be open until the end of the year! It's your chance to scoop up the best handmade goodies and great prices for the holidays.

I found this shop on Etsy yesterday when I was looking for items to feature in our Small Something collage for the winter issue. I had obviously wandered off track and started thinking about the stories we are shooting for winter, found my self looking at clothes and luckily stumbled across Made by Muku.
Made by Muku is the product of two artists working together inspired by their 10 month old child. Their fabrics are soft, the designs full of movement and the colors are muted and beautiful.

I love when I check the Small mailbox and there are thoughtful, creative press kits I can pour over during my afternoon cup of tea. This weeks favorite is from Mini & Maximus: "a new eco-friendly, art inspired kids tee shirt and poster company." Each season Mini & Maximus collaborate with a well known or up and coming artist for their tees and limited edition posters. Looks like Mini & Maximus is obsessed with art and illustration just like the crew over here at Small!
Kicokids is having their smarty quote competition again, after an overwhelming response they feel more kids voices need to be heard!
